Visibly Hidden

We read it in the newspaper, we encounter it every day as we ride the jitneys, and we smell the disgusting odor of the garbage floating in the river and the chemicals being discharge in the creeks. Pollution is everywhere. It happens when pollutants contaminate the natural surroundings, which brings about changes that can affect our normal existence adversely. It disturbs our ecosystem and the sense of balance in the environment. With innovation and growth in our lives, pollution has already touched its peak, giving increase to human illness.

Pollution occurs in different forms. The air, water, soil, noise, radioactive heat and thermal light. Nevertheless, the most prominent and hazardous form of pollution is the air. It happens due to many reasons.

Air pollution is very hard to detect using our eyes. It is usually detected by our nose and affects our lungs and immune system. We often think about air pollution when we are on the crowd with many vehicles roaming around. Wherever we go, our air is already polluted. For instance, when experiencing traffic, there is a minimal passageway of smoke and belch coming from the vehicles. Therefore, the tendency is we are inhaling and being exposed to pollution for a long time, except those who are in closed vehicles. Those who live or stay near factories or any industrial work places that produce smoke and chemical fume are likely to be expose to pollution that is very unsafe especially to babies, sick and elderly. Once our lungs are affected, our immune system will automatically follow. It will make our body weak and destroy the parts of our body. Malls and stores also contribute to the pollution. The burning of non-biodegradable resources greatly contributes to the green-house effect.

The responsibility for our economic well-being rest first on ourselves, second on our family and third on the school. We can be a start of a big change. We can start it by setting ourselves as good examples. As a student if your house is near to your school, you can just walk by or ride on a bike. Your schoolmate will be inspired and an organization that will promote the use of bicycle can be found. Nothing is impossible. Having a group with the same goal for reducing air pollution can be the start of reducing other kinds of pollution too. If not with the organization, encourage your family members and your community. Whoever you are, whatever your status is, age, sex, and so on is never a hindrance to lead a promotion.

All of us have basic responsibilities to become self-reliant and to care for the living things and environment. In order to become self-reliant, you must be willing to work. Enforcement of Laws, for example in section 26, Duty of National Government Agencies in the Maintenance of Ecological Balance where the government have this duty and thereof strong implementation of this to obliged any project or program that causes air pollution explain the goals and objectives of the project or program. Its impact upon the people and in the community in terms of environmental or ecological balance and the measures that will be undertaken to prevent or minimize the adverse effect thereof. Honorable work is a basic source of happiness, self-worth and prosperity.

Talking about air pollution, how can we say that we are already suffering from this? Are we not sensitive enough to realize this? On the other hand, are we not knowledgeable enough to know we are already poisoned? I guess its about time to take a step towards doing something about it. It is one of the issues that has been taken for granted. We should not forget that this little thing has a great impact to our environment as a whole.
